I have fond memories of when I was kid of those special Saturday afternoons that my mom would take my sister and I shopping. We would venture into the city from Thornhill, which seemed like a road trip back then. It would be an exciting girls afternoon of everything fashion. Our favorite stomping grounds was none other than Over The Rainbow in Yorkville.
I remember it so clearly, walking into the gigantic store with a larger denim selection than any little girl could imagine. This was the place that my sister and I purchased our first pair of luxury jeans. We grew out of the age of ‘being kids in a candy store’ and grew into the age of ‘being young women in a clothing store’.
So many firsts happened for me at Rainbow besides just jeans. I will always remember my first velour Juicy Couture jumpsuit with rhinestones. (I know, doesn’t seem as luxurious now as it did then.) I also remember buying my first piece of costume jewellery there. It was a 2 strand gold chain necklace with faux pearls. That’s when I started realizing the importance of accessorizing. (Thank you Rainbow!)
I will always remember how friendly the staff were, and how Joel Carmen, the owner, was always there with a big smile on his face. My mother, an old friend of Joel’s (who isn’t?), used to have a store under theirs with her family called, The John. Maybe that’s why I feel such a connection with Rainbow…or maybe it is just the amazing selection ☺
No girls’ day was complete without a stop at Summer’s Ice Cream Shop just under Over the Rainbow. It was always a delicious ending to a perfect day.
Now we are proud to celebrate Over the Rainbow’s 35th Anniversary on Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28. This celebration will be filled with giveaways, a photo booth, music, charity bbq and gift bags (including something specials from yours truly.)
After all these years, we are so proud that Three’s Company Accessories is available at such a historical fixture in Toronto’s shopping scene. And we cannot help but give them some credit for our fashion education at such a young age. As well, a kudos to a family owned business, as we know, it isn’t always easy but definitely well worth it.
